Evaluation and Education
XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is a robust XML-based reporting framework designed to improve the usefulness of business and financial data. XBRL opens up financial information to advanced search and analysis that was never possible before.
Bowne has been involved with the XBRL mutual fund effort at the SEC from the beginning, having participated in the creation of the Investment Company Institute's (ICI) Risk Return taxonomy. Once endorsed by the SEC as part of the voluntary program, Bowne was the first company to file XBRL risk return information on behalf of one of its clients, lending both our experience and expertise to ensure a successful submission. Our XBRL specialists are available to discuss the current XBRL initiatives with you including your options on participating and submitting XBRL data to the SEC.
Bowne's XBRL team is headed up by Rob Blake, Senior Director of Interactive Services. Rob has more than 16 years of experience in business reporting and technology and is a founding member of XBRL. Prior to joining Bowne, Rob was the Project Director for the SEC's US GAAP Financial Statement Taxonomy Project, where he oversaw the creation of the new XBRL taxonomies that will be used by all US public companies.
Bowne's knowledgeable and qualified XBRL team is available to discuss the current SEC XBRL initiatives, XBRL's impact on today and tomorrow's regulatory reporting environment, the benefits of participating in the current voluntary program, and its potential impact on your business.

- Investment Management (IM) US GAAP for financial data such as schedule of investments and financial highlights
- ICI Risk Return for risk return data
The Bowne/Rivet solution integrates seamlessly into your existing workflow and focuses on providing you education and understanding on XBRL while at the same time completing your risk return information in XBRL for submission to the SEC. It's an easy way to get ahead of the curve and prepare for the forthcoming SEC mandate.
Software that gives you control
An innovative blend of best-in-class software applications and professional services allows you to outsource the markup process or develop the internal skills and technology support to bring it in-house at your own pace. In contrast to machine-based service bureau offerings, the Bowne/Rivet solution makes sure your filing is not only accurate and tailored to your specific needs but also allows you to take control of the XBRL creation and review process.
ICI and XBRL
The Investment Company Institute became involved with XBRL to help empower investors to make more informed decisions and comparisons among different funds. ICI developed the Risk Return taxonomy with the help of many companies including Bowne and Rivet. Work was completed early in 2007 and the SEC modified the rules of the voluntary program to start accepting XBRL-based risk return filings on August 20, 2007.
