About the Author

Patty Johnston received her law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1987 and was admitted to the Alberta bar in June, 1988.

Patty spent three years in private practice before joining The Alberta Stock Exchange in 1991. In 1995 Patty became Vice President & General Counsel of the ASE. In 1999, Patty joined the Alberta Securities Commission as Director, Legal Services & Policy Development, where she was responsible for overseeing local, multijurisdictional and national securities law related policy development and legislative amendments, contested takeover bids and exemptive relief applications.

In 2006 Patty joined FirstEnergy Capital Corp. as Vice President, Compliance & Legal, where she spent 2 years performing compliance and legal related functions for a full service investment dealer specializing in energy.

In February 2008 Patty joined the Energy Resources Conservation Board as general counsel.

Patty is also the author of two books on securities regulation for non-lawyers titled Alberta Securities Law Simplified and Ontario Securities Law Simplified, which are now in their 6th and 3rd editions respectively.
