Despite the worldwide credit crisis and high volatility in the capital markets, activity in the mid-market M&A sector in Russia in the first half of 2008 has increased year-over-year. Investment in Russian businesses continues to offer a unique opportunity, within a growing market and the lower threshold for financial resources on larger deals, since partial debt financing is generally not needed.
Even in this turbulent global financial environment, the report highlights that mid-market M&A activity in Russia is expected to be stable or even increase in the medium term.
Key findings include:
- In the first half of 2008, the number of disclosed mid-market deals increased by 30% compared to the first half of 2007.
- The average deal size increased by about 40% to USD 120 million.
- 65% of deals done in 2008 were in the mid-market space.
Consumer goods, industrials, telecom/media/technology were the most active sectors.
