Bowne Digital Services (BDS) was formed to take advantage of the significant opportunity spawned by the convergence of database processing and digital print technologies. We started with a small core of seasoned Bowne professionals and recruited dataprocessing experts from various disciplines. Immediately, this team was inundated with opportunities uncovered by Bowne's financial printing sales organization. This confirmed our view that opportunities abound where the disciplines of printing and the flexibility of digital technologies are merging.

KeyCorp, one of the most innovative regional banks in the financial services industry, has had a long and successful relationship with Bowne of Cleveland. The strength and scope of this relationship meant that KeyCorp relied on Bowne to provide the latest print and technology solutions. Faced with the changing communications needs of KeyCorp's defined contribution 401(k) business, George Ketvertis and Dan Filippi, both sales vice presidents from Bowne of Cleveland, called on BDS to help develop a unique digital solution using various print and database products which KeyCorp had never considered before. Several months later, BDS was processing more than a quarter of a million customized statements for KeyCorp clients, alleviating the need for KeyCorp to develop and support new technologies in-house. As proof of our success, the Bowne/KeyCorp relationship continues to evolve as more digital business is developed and produced for other business units within the bank.

Another Bowne relationship which led to BDS business was with Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. Chase had always turned to Bowne for its expertise in time-critical financial print solutions. Nancy Leigh, a sales vice president in New York, sought out Bowne Digital Services to help Chase develop a new combined statement for the financial products offered through its unit investment trust group and John Nuveen and Company in Chicago. Working with a team of more than 20 designers, programmers, financial analysts, marketing executives, and brokers, Bowne Digital Services helped create a state-of-the-art document which reports the performance of various financial products on one statement.

NOT ONLY DOES BDS SPECIALIZE IN FINANCIAL SERVICES, THIS NEW DIVISION HAS FOUND ITS DIGITAL EXPERTISE APPLICABLE IN THE EXPANDING HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY AS WELL.

Introduced by Bowne sales representative Sue Raphael, BDS was asked by Oxford Health to develop a customized enrollment kit for the fast growing Medicare health practice. Within a week, BDS had developed a prototype and went into production of a multipart kit containing variable data-driven information in addition to conventionally printed material. As the health care industry grapples with unprecedented growth and dynamic change, the need to communicate timely, customized information increases also. For example, most health care networks today are forced to print and mail physician directories containing hundreds of pages of the constantly changing list of doctors participating in the network. The directory is already out of date when it is mailed to participants. BDS is working with a number of physician networks to provide database-driven directories tailored to a specific geographic area and type of practice.

There are more than 22 million defined contribution 401(k) investors needing up-to-the-minute investment performance statements, and millions more Americans enrolled in health maintenance organizations. Bowne Digital Services is growing by providing the kind of technology-based solutions these markets are coming to expect from their printing partners.
